May 4    Floriography: The Lost Language
Did you know that during the Victorian Era there was whole unspoken language of Flowers? The coded language of floriography meant that Victorians could express affection, desire or disdain, allowing a society governed by strict etiquette to show its true feelings.
Flowers have a longstanding tradition as a means of emotional expression. When we wish to convey our affection, joy or condolences, and words won't suffice, we rely on their beauty to speak for us.
Do you know someone that would be a "daisy in a field of roses?" What does the humble dandelion symbolize? How about Herbs?
Come spend a delightful May afternoon with us at Trousdale Place, learn the meanings behind your favorite blooms, create your own bouquet that "tells all," keep it for yourself or deliver it to a friend. A tour of Trousdale Place is included.
The secret language of flowers is back in fashion!

This rollicking romp is a melange of off the wall farce and near murder mystery. Guests are due at Lady Valonia's stately manor (a castle with a weird history) for the announcement of her nephew Dustin's engagement to Judy Blake. Unluckily, Dustin's former flame also arrives to find out why Dustin dumped her while Judy's brother is persuaded to go shoot at starlings. The family solicitor is on his way to change Valonia's will (out of Dustin's favor) and Judy's school chum Gwendolyn is coming to ensnare Dustin's cousin, a humble curate. A stray bullet enters the library and Dustin finds Valonia with a hole in her blouse oozing warm red liquid. By the time he gets help, the body has vanished. Meanwhile, the picketing cooks' and maidservants' unions have raised the drawbridge, entrapping everyone as night falls. The solicitor's wife thinks he's having an affair with Gwendolyn and arrives with horsewhip in hand on the incoming fire engine. Who said the place was on fire!? May 11    Between the Stitches: A Sewing Workshop Series

Join us for a sewing workshop series at Wynnewood inspired by the book, All That She Carried. In that book, a handsewn sack is passed down from generation to generation providing a tangible connection for a family who endured slavery. Textiles are often handed down from generation to generation and we all have had a "lucky" garment...we wear, sleep under, and spend our lives close to fabric.

In this workshop series, we put needle and thread to work preserving our own histories. Whether it's learning to make a paper-pieced quilt from scraps of treasured textiles or honing your embroidery skills to pass down family wisdom in stitch form - honor your history by stitching memories and embracing “the space between the stitches”.

English Paper Piecing - April 27 @ 2 pm to 4 pm - $15 per person

Learn the quilting art of paper piecing! Use scraps of treasured fabric to create a family heirloom. Participants will learn the basics of paper-piecing and begin a quilt, trivet, or other item. 2-hour class/ Beginner level to Intermediate

Embroidered Memories - May 11 @ 2 pm to 4 pm - $15 per person

Learn simple embroidery and leave a legacy of memories in stitches. Participants will learn four basic stitches. 2-hour class/ Beginner level to Intermediate

Beginner: Knows how to thread needle, can do a neat running stitch and whip stitch

Intermediate: More advanced hand-sewing skills - can do backstitch

May 16    I Shot My RIch Aunt: A Stiff-Upper-Lip Comedy
Endless belly laughs precede the utterly insane finale. Join us at the show!

May 26    Bluegrass Show for the Gallatin City Cemetery
The City of Gallatin has re-announced a bluegrass music show for Sunday, May 26th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Gallatin’s Downtown Square. The show was originally intended to be held in the Gallatin City Cemetery; however, social media complaints about having music in the cemetery prompted organizers to change plans. The program is now split into two events in support of the cemetery. The free bluegrass show will be held in Gallatin’s Downtown Square later that evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. N. Water between Franklin Street and Main will be closed during the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chair for the bluegrass show. Both events are organized by the Gallatin City Cemetery Committee, whose members consist of City department heads, historians, business leaders, and specialists in the maintenance of cemeteries. “Stirring things up started the conversation about the needs of the cemetery, but some people got it wrong about what old-timers had in mind,” Ken Thomson, member of the Gallatin City Cemetery committee and President of the Sumner Historical Society, said. “Starting in the late 1800s, the Gallatin City Cemetery was modified to be more like a park, like they had in Europe at that time. Community gatherings just like this were common, and that’s what we were trying to bring back.” Thomson and others on the committee hold meetings and organize work sessions to restore monuments and other projects around the cemetery. In its sixth year, the traditional Decoration Day at the Gallatin City Cemetery will feature a brief ceremony honoring those buried who served in the military and volunteers will take part in headstone restoration. “Many of the monuments are leaning, broken or damaged by time and neglect,” Gallatin Vice Mayor Lynda Love said. “It’s important for us to advocate for this historic place and do more than simply cut the grass.” The free bluegrass show in Gallatin’s Downtown Square will mirror the layout of the popular music series, “Third Thursday on Main,” which will start in June. Two bands will perform, including the Nashville-based bluegrass band Wharfgrass, specializing in bluegrass versions of *Grateful Dead songs. The second band, “Midnight Ride,” will perform traditional bluegrass songs. Between sets, historians and cemetery supporters will speak to the audience about restoration efforts intended for the Gallatin City Cemetery. Bluegrass musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments to participate in “Pickin’ Circles” on the sidewalks of Downtown Gallatin during and after the show. Chairs will be reserved for musicians only in these areas. *The Grateful Dead was an American band formed in 1965 and is known for “jam band” music influenced by rock, blues, jazz, folk, country and bluegrass. For more information about Decoration Day or to become involved with the restoration of the Gallatin City Cemetery, please contact Jeff Hentschel in the Mayor’s Office at 615-451-5961.
